Remembering “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

Today is two years since “Rowdy” Roddy Piper has passed. He was an incredible force in wrestling and entertainment throughout my childhood, and into my adult life. As I was a wrestling fan from early childhood, Piper was always one of those guys who stood out to me. My first memories were when he feuded with Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. As a small child the dog collar match really frightened me.

Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine (Dog Collar… by WWFOldSchool

A few years later, Piper would join the WWF and become an temporary manager, and personality, which led to his very own segment, “Pipers Pit”. This segment always consisted of Piper calling our other wrestlers to interview, then would insult them, and it would almost always end with a fight. The heat Piper had as a heel at WWF was amazing, and he hadn’t even wrestled. When he finally wrestled Hogan, in that MTV special with Cyndi Lauper and Captain Lou, he helped Hogan become more beloved by the crowd, for as snide and pompous as Piper could be, Hogan was equally wholesome and inspiring… it was one of Hogans more memorable moments of my childhood, and it was also what slung shot Piper to stardom.

Over the years Piper was the IC champion, was The “President” of the company, and was  seen as a guest ref in matches, then from WWF went to WCW and ran an memorable feud with NWO that lasted nearly two years. He took a chunk of time off and returned to WWE in the early 2000’s, mostly in a non wrestling role. He left the company at some point, and had a brief run in TNA, after which he returned to WWE, as well as did a series of appearances on the Independent circuit before his death.

What really got me about Piper, was the way he was able to keep your attention. When he spoke, people listened, well unless they were booing… He could play the crowd like a violin, and very few wrestlers who have succeeded him, have even come close to his greatness on the mic. Piper influenced a legion of wrestlers, managers, and personalities, with his quick wit, and his seemingly boundless energy and love for the business.

He will never be forgotten.

Great Balls of Fire Predictions!

Its time for another round of PPV predictions! This time it’s for WWE’s Great Balls of Fire, which is going down in Dallas, TX at the American Airlines Center on July 9th… which also happens to be my birthday. Whether or not I will watch the PPV and cover it live is up in the air as of now, as I may just watch it later on the [clink id=”2″ target=”_blank”]WWE Network[/clink], but non the less, here are my predictions!

Universal Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe: I don’t care. Honestly this could be a death match and they could both be eaten alive by Braun Strowman, and I still would barely blink an eye. These are two of the most boring WWE personalities as of right now… Lesnar will hold onto the belt till SummerSlam at the very least.

Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman (Ambulance Match): While I like watching these two fight, the ambulance match stipulation is fucking stupid. It not a fun gimmicky match, its a predictable one. Now its hard for me to say who will win for sure, as you know WWE is trying to push Reigns, and folks are confused as to what his “tweener” status is… Is he a face, is he a heel? Who the fuck are we rooting for in this match? I think Reigns is capable of a lot more, but frankly the writing sucks, and creative has no idea how to use him. Strowman is a monster, I dig it. He’s scary, he has destroyed half the RAW roster, we totally get it… But to me this match and the Lesner/Joe match are both two similar dudes fighting each other. I’d have rather seen all these guys in a 4 way match, with the stipulation that kicks in the nuts are legal. Then maybe some bals would be on fire!

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss vs. Sasha Banks: I hate Alexa Bliss, Not because of her character, but because she takes to social media to demean people who have done a lot more than she has in the business, and who if ever got the opportunity would kick the shit out of her. Shes a shitty person, so I hope Sasha Banks hands her her ass, and takes the belt away… Banks all the way,

Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt: Meh… I feel like the writers on RAW just don’t give a fuck anymore. As much as I like Seth Rollins, I just don’t feel any excitement about this match. I am going with Rollins on this one.

WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville vs. Akira Tozawa: Probably the most exciting match on the card, this should be the main event. Tozawa is on fire, and it would be nice to see a title change, not that I think Neville is a bad champ, actually I think he is great. I just think its time to see Tozawa shine.

Sold Out Shows: How You Can Still Get Tickets!

As NJPW themselves posted, tickets to the highly anticipated G1 Special in Long Beach, California sold out quickly, in two hours after their release they were gone, and when they released additional tickets, they were gone in two minutes!

Yes, NJPW does have that many fans who want to see their product LIVE, but that wasn’t the end to the ticket hype, as the tickets also showed up on aftermarket sites like Ticket Liquidator, and a dozen tickets for the second night are still available!  (if you are going to purchase them, Use promo code TL4TH for 10% off!)

Another brand that seems to sell out everywhere they go is WWE NXT as they tend to offer smaller shows, in Armories and other smaller venues, so these tickets often sell out quickly. These tickets are also often found on the secondary market, [clink id=”85″ target=”_blank”]like here on Ticket Liquidator[/clink] or also can sometimes be found on [clink id=”69″ target=”_blank”]WWE’s Official Reseller Stubhub[/clink].

So as you can see, even if you miss the opening sale of the show’s you can still get tickets. Often the prices fluctuate on the aftermarket, based on demand, so keep your eyes on those seats, but if you really want them, grab them when you can!
